What is Therapeutic Writing?

Therapeutic writing forms a personal narrative which can be either spoken or written. Therapeutic writing includes journals, unsent letters, poetry, dreams, stepping stones, paths not taken, captured moments, stream of consciousness, etc. This workshop offers you the opportunity to write some personal narrative. Experience writing your personal narrative and explore how it feels to share all or part of it with others. We hope that this workshop is a starting place and afterwards you will be encouraged to explore writing further and perhaps use it in your therapeutic practice. Working experientially online, you will find there is a level of privacy and solitude which is not available in a face to face training setting.

Your personal narrative can remain personal to you – see below

What is an online learning group?

Our groups work together online by communicating over the internet. We type our communications and send them to each other either by email (which can sometimes take a few minutes to deliver) or more instantly using the text chatscreen in our private online classroom (where you can both see and hear me and watch powerpoints). One week before the Workshop begins, emails are sent round with more details.

It is our experience that members of a group such as this often choose to stay in contact after the Workshop has finished.

If you are unfamiliar with chatrooms and would like to have an individual 10 mins. session during the week before the workshop begins, please contact Gill Jones by clicking here

What equipment will I need?

You will need:

A computer which is connected to the internet.

Who is this Workshop for?

Any counsellor or psychotherapist who would like to explore how the written word might be used as a therapeutic tool with clients who are either online or face to face and who would like to experience being a member of an online learning group.

What technology skills will I need?

It is helpful if you are a reasonably confident typist and familiar with your computer's software for communicating (e.g. email program and a chatscreen such as Instant Messenger). Our online classroom can only be accessed during the time of the workshop but there is a demo area where you can take a look around and familiarise yourself with its chatscreen at any time before the workshop. The URL for the demo area is: http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk /

The Workshop requires you to move between different programs – your email Inbox, the online classroom - and your computer's Word software. We believe this will be easiest if you minimise areas you are not working in, keeping them open on your taskbar and your computer connected to the internet. You may need to check your internet service provider's ‘rules' for your connection. If they automatically disconnect you after a period of time, please make sure you do disconnect periodically during the morning so that they won't time you out.

During the day you will be working in three ways:

1. On your own using your computer's word program;

2. Receiving and sending emails from your email program;

3. In the online classroom with the whole workshop group.

What counselling skills do I need?

During the workshop we ask you to share pieces of personal writing with other workshop members. We anticipate that this sharing is done professionally and that the other group members treat it as they would treat client information (i.e. the person sharing is temporarily a client and the content is confidential). You may wish to share all or part of your writing or you may prefer to share the experience of writing it rather than the writing itself. What and how much you share is entirely up to you. All disclosures of personal material will remain confidential to the Workshop group. A contract for the Workshop will be available for everyone to read, augment, amend and agree at the start of the Workshop.
