Using Transactional Analysis (TA) in Online Counselling

Workshop led by Gemma Mason on November 29th and 30th 2008.

Email about this workshop
Online application form

An introduction to the use of the concepts of Transactional Analysis and how these can be used with clients in online counselling.

An Experiential Workshop delivered from our website to your computer. Experience learning as member of an online group through a range of communication media.

What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis is 'a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change' (International Transactional Analysis Association). This workshop will cover:

  • the philosophical assumptions that underpin TA;
  • core concepts;
  • contracting;
  • the use of role play material to demonstrate these in action.

What is an online learning group?

Our groups work together online by communicating over the internet. We type our communications and send them to each other either by email (which can sometimes take a few minutes to deliver) or more instantly using our private groupboard chatroom on the website (which is password protected) or the Messenger chatroom. In the week before the Workshop begins, all members will be encouraged to communicate with each other using email and Messenger.

It is our experience that members of a group such as this often choose to stay in contact after the Workshop has finished.

Pre-workshop help and support will be available to participants of the workshop during specific tutor facilitated sessions.

It is advisable that all participants are familiar with chatrooms before joining this workshop.

If you would like to have an individual 20 mins. session before the workshop begins, please contact Gemma Mason by clicking here

What equipment will I need?

You will need:

A computer connected to the internet with Windows Live Messenger chat software already loaded.

If you haven't got Messenger already installed, perhaps you know someone who can do it for you and show you how it works?

Who is this Workshop for?

Any counsellor or psychotherapist who would like to explore how TA might be used with clients who are either online or face to face and who would like to experience being a member of an online learning group.

What technology skills will I need?

It is helpful if you are a reasonably confident typist and familiar with your computer's software, emails and internet chatrooms.

The Workshop requires you to move between different areas of the internet. These include: your email Inbox, our campus chatroom, your Messenger chatscreen and your computer's Word software. We believe this will be easiest if you minimise areas you are not working in, keeping them open on your taskbar and your computer connected to the internet. However, you will need to check your service provider's ‘rules' for your connection. If they automatically disconnect you after a period of time, please make sure you do disconnect periodically during the morning so that they won't time you out.

During the day you will be working in three ways:

1. On your own using your computer's word program;

2. In an MSN chatroom sharing thoughts with one or more other workshop members;

3. In the campus chatroom with the whole workshop group.

When does it start?

The workshop is held in two sessions one on November 29th from 9.30am – 1pm and the second on 30th November from 1.30 – 5pm. (British Summer Time)
